There are some factors that are causing the infant food market in Spain to record a clear downward trend in recent years. The effects of the crisis and declining birth rates are the most important. The number of births has declined very sharply in our country since the peak of 2008, where 519,780 children were born, until today, where there were barely 425,390 births. These figures undoubtedly indicate that the population potentially consuming infant food has been significantly reduced. In addition, the crisis has led many women to spend more time with their children and to prepare their children’s meals, to maintain breastfeeding for longer, to change children’s milk to adults, and so on. Taking into account all these facts, it is understandable that the infant feeding sector is not going through its best moment. Available estimates indicate that the total market for baby food should have been around 55,000 tonnes last year, worth 480 million euros. These figures indicate interannual reductions of around 3%, both in terms of volume and value. In modern distribution, potitos are the main supply of this market, accounting for 62.6% of all sales in volume and 47.8% in value. Then there are the infant milk, with quotas of 23.6% and 38.6% and cereals and papillas, with 13.7% and 13.5%. Within the potitos, are the elaborated with fruit and the desserts most demanded. Among the milk, liquid ones control 90% of sales by volume and around 50% in value, while powdered milk represents 10% of the total in volume and 50% in value. In the case of porridge, powder presentations account for the highest sales, around 70% of the total in volume and value.
